January 2015

The PHX Terminal 4 South Apron ASR Reconstruction (“T4 South”) Design-Bid-Build project focused on the removal and replacement of airside concrete panels affected by Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) at Phoenix Sky Harbor International. By leveraging a culture of collaborative teamwork with the development of unique means, methods and technologies to complete the work in the field, the project was delivered 55 days early, nearly $0.9M under budget, and with a perfect safety record and no claims. The challenges included consideration that the 94,000 SY of concrete being replaced contained an embedded fueling and EFSO lines, were on an active apron, and required the heavy civil equivalent of a “sterile” operating environment free of FOD within an “under-ten-foot” proximity to active aircraft. n successfully delivering this 14-subphase project, the Banicki team balanced the needs and realities of field production with a mission-critical, zero-tolerance FOD mandate and a commitment to partnering and transparency with project stakeholders to develop an industry-leading model for airside ASR replacement.
