Taxiway R Bridge Repair Methacrylate

City of Phoenix Aviation Department

Phoenix, Arizona

Date Completed

February 2015

The Taxiway R Bridge Repair occurred in a unique and sensitive location that incorporated the potential for both airside and landside impacts. The scope of the project included cleaning of the No. 07963 and No. 07964 bridge decks, identification and repair of spalling and unsound concrete, and the application of a Methacrylate coating to provide for extended structure life and decreased maintenance costs. As part of the assessment process, Banicki utilized specialized experience and resources to provide a successful bead-blasting test demonstration in which less than 0.01% of the beads utilized for deck cleaning were found to migrate from the project site – a 23% improved performance over previous trials by other entities. Banicki received the first approval issued by the Aviation Department for the use of bead blasting within the airside environment. Utilizing this innovative methodology, the Taxiway R project was delivered on time, on budget, with zero impacts to the 37,000 vehicles travelling under the work site on a daily basis.
