PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This award-winning project entailed a preplanned 39-day full shutdown of Scottsdale Airport, one of the busiest single-runway general aviation airports in the world, to facilitate the full reconstruction of the airport’s runway as well as install new drainage, blast pads, and runway and taxiway lighting. Numerous self-perform crews, subcontractors, and material suppliers worked 24/7 day and night through one of the heaviest monsoon seasons on record to complete this aggressively scheduled project ahead of schedule. Seven inches of rain occurred over the 39-day duration of the project, including three inches of rain in a two day period after the existing runway was fully removed. Redundant pump stations were setup in an organized grid throughout the runway to facilitate subgrade dry up and enable construction to progress through the record monsoon season.

Being an around the clock project with numerous subcontractors, Banicki facilitated hourly coordination and schedule updates between our self-perform crews, all subcontractors, material suppliers, the design engineer (Mead & Hunt), as well as Scottsdale Airport Operations. Resources (manpower, equipment, material) were checked and analyzed on a daily basis and the P6 CPM schedule was updated daily to ensure timely project delivery amongst the extremely adverse conditions within the record monsoon season. The project followed and utilized all FAA construction and material specifications. This project won the 2021 Quality in Construction Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt runway from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA).

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

During preconstruction, Banicki worked closely with Scottsdale Airport and the City of Scottsdale to develop an accelerated construction schedule with selected construction dates of July 6th, 2021 through August 14th, 2021. These dates were chosen to provide the least impact to airport tenants. Banicki also worked hand in hand with Design Team Mead & Hunt to develop the construction phasing and joint layout for the P401 FAA AC pavement. Other services Banicki provided during preconstruction were:

  • GMP’s developed at 30% / 60% / 90% / final design
  • Detailed bid packages for work disciplines in each GMP
  • Detailed quantity take-offs
  • Design assist & development
  • Risk mitigation
  • CPM scheduling
  • Construction phasing & sequencing
  • Value engineering
  • DBE & SBE outreach

UNIQUE CIVIL SCOPE

Wire line was utilized along the full length of the runway reconstruction and surveyed twice daily to provide exemplary grade control, smoothness, and rideability for the placement of the new runway pavement section.
