The SR 179 Pedestrian Crossing at Oak Creek created a grade-separated pathway beneath Sedona’s main arterial to improve safety, reduce congestion, and connect the city core with the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village. These critical improvements allow pedestrians to travel under SR 179 rather than cross it at street level, eliminating a major mid-block conflict point and enhancing traffic flow through one of the region’s busiest corridors.

The project involved constructing a 10 to 12-foot-wide concrete shared-use path beneath the existing Oak Creek bridge, with approach ramps on both sides of the highway. Enhancements included new decorative retaining walls, sidewalks, ADA ramps, pedestrian handrails, and safety railing. Additional features included the reconstruction of a section of the historic Tlaquepaque wall, upgraded irrigation and landscaping, updated striping and signage, and a custom waterwheel installation that provides a distinct focal element.

The SR 179 Pedestrian Crossing was delivered through close coordination with the City of Sedona, ADOT, Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, and APS. Built within a constrained downtown footprint, the final result offers a permanent, safe, and visually integrated connection that strengthens walkability and supports Sedona’s long-term mobility goals.
