PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This two-phased project was located on Brannigan Park Road and I-40 in Bellemont, directly in front of the extremely busy Pilot Truck Stop and Days Inn. The existing traffic configuration on Brannigan Park Road caused truck traffic accessing the Pilot to continuously back up onto I-40. This project was constructed to alleviate the congestion in front of the Pilot Truck Stop and eliminate the traffic backups onto I-40.

Project scope included the construction of a new PCCP roundabout and PCCP approaches; an asphalt access road into the Pilot; the full reconstruction of the intersection of Transwestern Drive and Brannigan Park Road; as well as the full reconstruction of Brannigan Park Road from the intersection east to the new roundabout. This project also included extensive hard rock excavation and trenching for new drainage.

Due to the heavily trafficked project location, Banicki coordinated daily with numerous project stakeholders including Coconino County, ADOT, the local fire department, the Pilot Truck Stop, the Days Inn, the under-construction Shadow Mountain development, as well as various utility / facility owners.

 PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

Banicki successfully implemented numerous value engineering innovations on this project during preconstruction, including the removal of expensive and timely hard bedrock excavation on 75% of the new access road alignment that originally called for the placement of 24” of import non-expansive fill material beneath the new pavement section. Banicki worked with designer Burgess & Niple to leave the bedrock lens we encountered exposed and intact, eliminate the import fill material, and reduce the ABC thickness of the structural pavement section while maintaining the proposed “Top of Asphalt” grades. We also repurposed excavated material originally intended to be exported offsite for additional slope fill material and on back slopes of roadside drainage swales. excavated material, originally intended to be exported offsite, for additional slope fill material and back slopes of roadside drainage swales.

During preconstruction, Banicki worked hand in hand with Burgess & Niple, Coconino County, the local fire department, and local businesses to develop a four-phase construction sequence with the first phase incorporating all required utility relocations (water, electric, fiber, communications, and gas). Banicki performed and provided extensive SUE level A pothole data to Burgess & Niple to prevent construction delays and allow third party utility owners time to respond with engineering solutions to observed conflicts. Other services Banicki provided during preconstruction were:

  • Design assist & development
  • Risk mitigation
  • Value engineering
  • Construction phasing & sequencing
  • GMP’s developed at 30% / 60% / 90% / final design
  • Detailed bid packages for work disciplines in each GMP
  • Detailed quantity take-offs
  • CPM scheduling
