Performed under our current Valley Metro JOC, these high-profile task orders included installing electrical and civil infrastructure for new Stand-Alone Validators (SAV) as part of Valley Metro’s Fare Collection System Modernization (FCSM) in preparation for the 2023 Superbowl. Banicki constructed the preliminary electrical and civil upgrades for the SAVs at all 42 of Valley Metro’s active light rail stations.

While working around active platforms and cognizant of sensitive station artwork, the project scope included demolition of existing Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) foundations, decorative paver removals, platform concrete demolition, installing electrical conduit and pull boxes for SAVs, pulling new communication cabling, pouring concrete for new SAV foundations, and precision pedestrian traffic control at 42 active light rail stations.

These complex task orders required real-time retrofitting in order to install the new SAV foundations, electrical conduit, pull boxes, and CAT 5 cable around existing electrical, lighting, and mechanical system components. Aside from one week of daytime work at noise-sensitive downtown stations, Banicki performed all work at night to minimize impacts to Valley Metro’s services. Low decibel lithium-ion battery powered jack hammers were used to reduce noise during nighttime demolition operations.

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

With Valley Metro’s light rail services running until the early morning hours and Banicki’s night shifts starting at 8 PM, pedestrian safety as well as work site delineation and protection were critical project components. Banicki worked meticulously with Valley Metro to detail precision phasing, hourly scheduling, and to delineate small work areas so construction could occur without impacting pedestrian access and egress from the platforms and trains.
