 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Banicki’s award-winning work on this project featured the construction of extremely technical and complex reinforced concrete elements for the new Rental Car Center Station, part of the $745M Sky Train® Stage 2 Project at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PSHIA). Sky Train® Stage 2 involved extending the elevated transportation system at PSHIA 2.5 miles from Terminal 3 to the Rental Car Center, providing passengers a much-needed connection from the airport terminals to the Rental Car Center.

Banicki’s project scope included a complex retrofit of the existing three level parking structure at the Rental Car Center to allow for Sky Train® guideway and passenger boarding and de-boarding platforms. Banicki also extended the Sky Train® guideway outside of the existing parking structure onto new cast in place 6,000 psi high-performance concrete elements.

Banicki performed detailed structural and geotechnical engineering analysis on this project for the design of the intricate falsework systems and load distribution slabs needed to construct the new concrete elements. Various shoring methods were utilized to support the existing parking structure and adjacent MSE wall during construction.

Senior Bridge Engineer Brian Grimaldi of Ethos Engineering, the structural engineering consultant on the project, described his experience with the Banicki Project Team as follows: “I worked with Banicki to solve complex structural issues on the Sky Train® Project and their teamwork and collaboration were top notch.”
