Date Completed

May 2021

Performed under our current Valley Metro JOC, this task order included structural and aesthetic repairs to Spans 8 and 9 of the Tempe Town Lake Light Rail Transit (LRT) Bridge Structure that occurred as a result of the Union Pacific train derailment fire.

Project scope included the removal of architectural expanded metal, steam cleaning and power washing of steel and concrete surfaces, protection of decorative lighting, sandblasting of the damaged protective coating system on the structural steel tube truss, painting the steel tube truss on the west side of Spans 8 and 9, and structural concrete repairs at Pier 8.

Banicki developed a two-phase pedestrian traffic control sequence that allowed Rio Salado Pathway to remain open during the Span 8 repairs and Tempe Town Lake Multi-Use Path to remain open during the Span 9 repairs. All work was performed at night to eliminate impacts to Valley Metro light rail operations.
