PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Terminal 4 South 1 Concourse Concrete Apron Project (the Project) was an incredible display of partnering and teamwork to deliver a critical piece of infrastructure at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). This Project was performed concurrently with McCarthy Building Companies’ (McCarthy) $310M Terminal 4 South 1 Concourse building project which received ENR Southwest’s 2022 project of the year award for the airport / transit category.

All work was performed directly adjacent to existing PHX Taxiways Sierra and Tango, Southwest Airlines’ T4 S2 concourse, and McCarthy’s $310M T4 S1 building construction. The Project encompassed work areas located in both airside and landside operational areas, requiring extensive coordination with the City of Phoenix Aviation Department (COP Aviation), Airfield Operations, TSA, Southwest Airlines, and McCarthy.

This Project included 43,750 SY (over 9 acres) of new aircraft rated 18” thick PCCP surrounding the new Terminal 4 South 1 Concourse (T4 S1) that was constructed in unison with the building of the new T4 S1 Concourse. The project also entailed a new vehicle service road (VSR), blast wall, and jet blast deflection fence that were constructed under the new T4 S1 Concourse using innovative construction techniques.

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

The Project originally called for six construction phases which Banicki resequenced and accelerated to four construction phases. Apron areas adjacent to critical AOA security access points were constructed first in order to facilitate access for McCarthy. Banicki also resequenced the construction of the VSR and blast wall that ran underneath the new T4 S1 Concourse from phase two to the final fourth phase, facilitating more efficient construction of the Concourse.

Banicki’s re-phasing of the Project allowed Taxiway Sierra to be opened to Group III and larger planes earlier than the specifications required. The Project was substantially complete in February of 2022, two months ahead of schedule when McCarthy completed the new T4 S1 Concourse building in April of 2022.
