PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project involved the complete bridge deck replacement of the West Willcox Traffic Interchange Underpass Bridge. The 250’ long four span continuous steel plate girder bridge was originally built in the early 1960’s. The bridge spanned both directions of the extremely busy I-10, thus meticulous safety planning and coordination were required. All three of the bridge’s piers were within the I-10 clear zone, thus a substantial portion of this project’s scope had to occur on weekends under full I-10 detours.

Project scope included the complete demolition and reconstruction of the bridge deck and barrier, approach slabs, and abutment backwalls. After demolition and prior to the installation of new bridge deck falsework, all four girder lines of the existing superstructure had to simultaneously be hydraulically jacked two inches to facilitate the removal of the existing rocker bearings and the construction of new reinforced concrete pedestals. New A709 steel sole plates, A709 steel flange plates, anchor bolts, and elastomeric bearings were also installed when the existing superstructure was jacked.

Further project scope included milling and replacing the top 2-3” of asphalt approaching the bridge, fog coating, guardrail, striping, signage, spillways, and decorative granite mulch on all four embankment slopes.

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

Due to the bridge and accompanying roadway having to be closed 7-months for construction, Banicki worked with ADOT during preconstruction to develop project bulletins and press releases. The bulletins were sent to local residents and detailed the project schedule, detour plan, and lines of contact should there be any questions or concerns throughout the project. The press releases, broadcast through ADOT’s website and email subscription service, detailed dates and times of I-10 weekend detours.

Banicki also worked hand in hand with designer of record Kimley-Horn and ADOT during preconstruction to revise both the local and I-10 detour plans. The revised local detour plans included much needed additional wayfinding signage and message boards throughout the project corridor and City of Willcox. The revised I-10 detour plans extended the limits of the advanced message boards and pre-warner signs for the full detour.
