PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This two-phased project, funded by the FHWA Highway Safety Improvement Program, resolved significant existing traffic management challenges and won the 2019 Arizona AGC Build Arizona Project of the Year Award based on exceptional partnering and the quality construction of an intricately designed roadway and highway corridor.

The project involved constructing two new dual-lane roundabouts at the intersection of I-8 and Araby Road (SR 195) as well as associated reconnections to I-8 ramps and Gila Ridge Road. To meet the unique constraints and traffic management challenges found on the north and south side of I-8 and Araby Road, ADOT utilized an innovative design featuring dual lane roundabouts with the inclusion of two Diamond Interchanges with U-Turn pockets. The six-way roundabout on the south side of I-8 was a first of its kind in Arizona.

PRECONSTRUCTION SERVICES

Banicki developed detailed maintenance of traffic (MOT) plans to ensure existing traffic flows through the project corridor weren’t reduced at any point during construction. We also performed extensive business outreach and coordination during preconstruction. Araby Road is a vital artery for trucking and the project site was surrounded by numerous major business stakeholders (RV World Distributer, T&A Produce, APS’s Yuma yard, two Circle K’s, Chevron, and others), thus our Project Team worked with these businesses to ensure impacts were minimized through the development of detailed MOT plans and phasing. The MOT plans required extensive planning and coordination to preserve existing traffic flows, maintain access / egress to all businesses, and accommodate the large / wide loads of agricultural equipment moving through the site regularly.
