Araby Road – Winner of the 2019 AGC Build Arizona Award
To meet the unique constraints and traffic management challenges found on the north and south side of Interstate 8 (I-8) and Araby Road (State Route 195) in Yuma, AZ, ADOT took the bold move to utilize an innovative design featuring dual lane roundabouts with the inclusion of two Diamond Interchanges with U-Turn pockets. The work to construct the dual lane roundabouts included 72,500 cubic yards of roadway excavation and demolition; 11,700 tons of asphaltic concrete; 856 square yards of PCCP pavement, deep stormwater drainage system installation utilizing 18”, 24“ and 36” RGRCP; over 2.5 miles of curb and gutter; over 300 lineal feet of soil nail wall, and a 19 foot high by 693 foot long retaining wall; ITS and signalization; signage and roadway marking. Throughout the project Banicki and ADOT partnered together through regular weekly meetings to ensure that the project was on track and not impacting the heavy truck traffic being utilized for the busy agricultural season and packing plant directly adjacent to the project. This was a two season project so schedule and coordination were critical so not to impact the agricultural, local and tourist traffic. This project was a huge success and was recognized with the 2019 AGC Build Arizona Award.
