CMAR: SCHULTZ CREEK DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS WINS APWA AZ PROJECT OF THE YEAR!
July 31, 2025 – We’re proud to share that the CMAR: Schultz Creek Drainage Improvements project was named the APWA Arizona Project of the Year in the Disaster or Emergency Construction / Repair ($5M to $25M) category! Completed under emergency circumstances after the 2022 Pipeline Fire, the project delivered rapid and resilient flood protection for the West Flagstaff community. The project involved the construction of 848 LF of double-barrel box culverts underneath US-180, one of the busiest roads through Flagstaff.
A central challenge of the project was utilities, and Banicki immediately partnered with all utility owners, Ardurra, the City of Flagstaff, and ADOT to develop relocation and protect-in-place plans. Relocations included a 20” watermain, sanitary sewer, APS power, Lumen fiber, Optimum fiber, and UniSource gas, all of which were completed without a single service disruption to the community. Equally as critical was the shoring, and Banicki implemented multiple complex systems to safely construct the culverts within a confined 40’ wide easement, constructing 100% of this project while maintaining both directions of traffic and the Flagstaff Urban Trails System (FUTS).
